Richard, a 12 year old diabetic in Maine needs a home

Richard is a 12 year old cat in a Maine shelter (in Westbrook) who is diabetic and is in dire need of a home. Diabetic Cats in Need has listed him at the top of their "911" list.

Richard came to the shelter as a stray and is currently unaltered. According to the shelter staff, he is very sweet and should do well with other pets and children.

Richard is not receiving insulin right now and is glucose is in the 300 to 400 range. He does not show ketones in his blood. He is on a grain free diet and is receiving B12 shots.

Here are some pictures of Richard:

On top of all of this, the shelter is overcrowded, understaffed and underfunded. Since Richard is older and diabetic, he is obviously harder to adopt out and his time may be limited.

Carl is the case manager for Richard, and I have asked if there is anything that can be done financially to help Richard stay at the shelter. I'll post updates when I hear from Carl. Hopefully, something can be done to help Richard stay at the shelter until he can find his forever home, and hopefully someone is able to take this little guy in quickly.

You can read more about Richard on the DCIN site or on their Facebook page.

Michael,

Just a tiny correction. I am not actually the case manager for Richard. Rather, another case manager, Jennifer, is assigned to Richard. On future postings, I will make sure that you have the name of the specific manager (there are currently 4 of us). Thank you!

Thank you, Michael, for posting Richard. Richard has now started Lantus insulin and DCIN has sent the shelter most everything it will need to care for Richard's diabetes. ~Venita

Richard has a new home in WA state. We tried to fly him there last week, but he got stranded in Houston because the Seattle airport was shut down for a winter storm. We diverted him to a foster home in the Tulsa OK area. Richard resumes his travels home tomorrow.

Thanks, Michael, for letting folks here know about Richard. We have lots of other very special adoptable diabetic cats on our blog at http://fdmb-cin.blogspot.com/.
