Meet Sam, a new DCIN cat in need of help

Sam is a DCIN cat with some special needs. He came from an abusive home and landed in a kill-shelter. Fortunately, a foster was found. Unfortunately, it was discovered that both of his back legs were broken in the past.

One of the legs healed successfully, the other did not. As a result, Sam lost his right rear leg last week. You can see a video of Sam walking with his previous leg here. The post about Sam on DCIN's site is here.

Sam is hyperglycemic, but the thought, and maybe the hope, is that the high glucose levels are caused by the problem with his broken leg.

What is needed to help Sam the most right now is financial help. I thought I would make it a little interesting. I'll match any donations made to DCIN from any Sugarcats members, up to a total of $150. So tell your friends and pass it around, and let's help this little guy. You can donate to Sam's expenses here.

Thank you so very much for your generosity, Michael. The DCIN Team is thrilled that you and SugarCats community supports DCIN, particularly Sam. Despite having such a sad story, he has a sunny personality.

I am so very sorry to tell you all that Sam died yesterday. On Wednesday this week, he became inappetant and started peeing where he was laying. On Thursday his bloodwork showed high billirubin and anemia. The skin on his neck was tearing. The vet and the DCIN case managers did all they could to come up differential diagnoses. But nothing made sense. He went into a coma and died in his foster Mom's arms on the way to the vet on Friday morning.

We had a necropsy performed. The vet found inappropriate connective tissue throughout his abdomen. She suspects either a very aggressive cancer or FIP. The case managers suspect FIP, because we have since learned that four cats rescued from this shelter by one organization in the last 2 months have died from FIP.

Our greatest sympathies to Amber, Sam's foster mom (and likely the person who would have become his furever Mom). She told us "I miss him so much; it feels like there's not enough glue in the world to hold the little pieces of my broken heart together."
