First, a brief history of Sugarcats. In 1998, around June, a group of people from the Feline Diabetes Messageboard discovered that it was illegal in the United Kingdom to blood test their diabetic cats. Silliness quickly took hold of the situation as cats adopted aliases to hide their identies and to allow cats and their humans to escape the country if needed. Rather than clog the FDMB with their fun, they started their own site. Thus, Sugarcats.com was born. These people became good friends, supporting each other through the trials and tribulations of being owned by a diabetic cat. They had a great deal of fun, but also came to lean on one another.

Because this group was experienced with the disease, they posted information on feline diabetes at Sugarcats to help others, but the site essentially remained private until April of 1999. Sugarcats.com became a public web site, expanding to include information for ordering UK PZI, the diabetic cat survey, and information on the different kinds of insulin. In June, the Sugarcats Map was born, allowing diabetic cats and their humans around the world to see where others lived. Since then, new features have been added regularly; The "Mewsletter", the Radio Room for live chats, the Message Center for sending messages, and an easier signup so people who don't wish participate in the "secret agent" stuff, can still explore the site.

Sugarcats recently started accepting advertising to help cover the costs of site hosting, maintenance and improvement. Only reputable advertisers are allowed. The decision was made early on not to use the services of one of the many banner ad agencies, opting instead for full control of the process. After covering costs, donations will be made to recognized animal welfare charities.

And more is coming. Currently in the works is an expanded Infirmary section of health information, revamped Agent Lounge, and a comprehensive list of sites related to cats (and maybe to dogs as well). Stay tuned. Below is a description of the site.

  • Headquarters - What most sites call a homepage. Because of our theme, we have the Headquarters. Here you will find the latest news on the site. Without a doubt, the best way to enter the site.
  • Communications Area - The messageboard. Here you will find a number of different messageboard for different purposes, from the silly to the fun to the supportive and the informative. Don't see a board that you like, or want one for just you friends? Just ask, it can probably be done.
  • Agent Lounge - Relax and take a load off. Cartoons, jokes and useless trivia. This is slated for some enhancements soon.
  • Walnut's Office - The location of our humble leader, Walnut (GA). Get a brief orientation into the world of feline espionage and sign up for service or to just browse the site.
  • Safehouses - A listing of all things friendly to diabetic cats and to cats in general. Here you will find the soon-to-be-world-famous Sugarcats Map.
  • Infirmary - Information for diabetic cat owners and cat owners in general. We are always looking for more information to post. Have any ideas, or written any articles, or want to? Let us know If it is useful and meets our standards, then we will be more than happy to post it.
  • Personnel - See a list of Sugarcats members, edit your own profile, and signup for site access.
  • Message Center - The Sugarcats version of Instant Messaging. Your friends who belong to Sugarcats can send you a message, either directly to your email address or to you when you are on the site. Either way, the "sendee's" and the "sender's" email address remains private.
  • In the Line of Duty - Memorials to cats. We honor any cat whose person cares to write a memorial. We will post it on the site for as long as we exist. Hopefully forever.
  • Radio Room - The Sugarcats version of live chatting. Join your Sugarcats friends online in one of the existing chat rooms, or create your own chat rooms for a private conversation.
